The Ralph Lauren vintage collection has two categories: first, a collection of 13 vintage garments Ralph Lauren dug out of its archive. The show opens with a patchwork quilt from 1856, and it’s a representation of the diverse cultural fabric of American fashion that serves as an introduction to the impressive display of mens- and womenswear spanning American history from the 1940s to present day. Patchwork is a tenet of Ralph Lauren’s Americana-steeped design philosophy, and it also reflects what visitors will see when they first enter the exhibition. It’s all in celebration of the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” the sequel of September’s part-one show, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” While that’s exciting news in and of itself, there’s more: The collection has been entirely curated by Vogue and is a small-batch mix of vintage and upcycled patchwork pieces.
